I didn’t choose a word of the year this year because I never bloody remember it, but you make a strong case for whatever! Hope the whatev vibes bring some positives for you this year

The whatev-vibes are working overtime this week, for sure ✨😬✨

Yikes 😬

I like “whatever“ as your word of the year. It evokes a similar feel as my own reminders of “let it go” and “let them.”💕💕

I'm a long-time guiding word of the year picker and so I love that you're trying it out this year! Whatever is a cracking word. Of course it can't be applied to everything but the stuff that is out of your control and to try to control is going to send you bananas? Whatever is ideal. My 2024 was full on and scheduled to the hilt so my word for this year is freedom.

A fabulous word! I hope it works out for you!

Why do you need a new year for a word of inspiration? Can't whatever happen whenever?

Love your word! I thought you were gonna pick “touché,” but since you didn’t maybe I will. French for “WHATEVER, motherfucker!” I looked it up.

Yikes! I swear my uterus actually ached as I read the bit about you IUD 😫😆

Trying to control our own emotional response to things is literally the only thing we can do about most of the shit that happens on a daily basis. I salute you, Guru Knight. I haven't chosen my word yet because every time I do that it gets detailed. Last year I chose "Nature" only for it to slap me in the face by pissing with rain for the first four months of the year here in the UK. Whatever sounds like a brilliant idea.

Oh dear 🫣 I’m hoping we got all of the torrential rain out of our system where I live in Oct-Dec *last* year. I need a dry sunny month in the worth way!!

Quintessential Gen X - we are the Whatever Generation!

My word for this year is FLOURISH. After being laid off in July 2023 and not getting another corporate job, I got my masters in Organizational Leadership this past May and put out a shingle as a professional genealogist who also tackles healing generational trauma. Lineage & Legacy, LLC is my business name. I got a long awaited breast reduction at the end of September and turned 50 on November 1st. The Year of 50 is gonna be different. I am currently taking a business class so that I can move mentally away from scarcity and into abundance in all its forms and really FLOURISH!!

I hope all your issues start working themselves out here soon! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

That sounds like an epic “rise from the ashes” into a whole new you! Amazing 👏👏👏 (I’ve heard great things about one’s 50’s—I hope they prove fun and fruitful for you!)

Yup, I've been saying that word a lot lately, and it does help in some situations. I agree on that. Then there are those times that nothing but breaking those cheap dishes from the dollar store will help. I'm tidy and quiet about it... whatever. It works for me. Use a hammer, really works the shit out of your system. I find it particularly helpful when I picture the people who sent me to that special place.

Thank you for this and the permission to just say it. But damn, I'm worried about your cards!

My friends and I had plans to go to a “rage room” when we were in NY last spring, but then somebody got Covid and we canceled. Your comment reminds me that I want to try again someday: I think throwing dishes and sledgehammering office equipment would be very therapeutic for me 😂

Lotta wisdom in those "whatevers" •ᴗ•

oh man, here's to a better 2025! "Whatever" feels very zeitgeisty right now, with the Mel Robbins "Let Them" theory making the rounds!

As a card-carrying 12-step member for 30+ years, I laughed when I saw that "Let Them" was selling like hotcakes. We knew that we should "let them" all along....it's the path to peace and serenity.

it does seem like a very obvious piece of advice for living with less conflict!

There’s a Norwegian expression used by older folks in Minnesota: Uff da. (Uff rhymes with wolf) Its used when anything bad happens and means “I’m sorry this happened”. You can say it when lamentable events happen to you, or when someone tells you about something that happened to them.

Expand full comment

Some of us “younger” folks in MN rely on the uff da to convey feelings too! 😅

🙂 It’s so useful and it also sounds like the feeling a little bit.

I may have to start working that one into conversation in 2025!

You’ve got to shrug and shake your head slowly side to side when you say it. 😉

My word is SUSTENANCE - to eat enough, be enough, HAVE enough.

That’s a great one! You can apply it on so many levels of life.

I'm so sorry about all the s#!t you have been having to deal with personally. It is also distressing to hear about all the devastation happening out west. I try not to think about the in-coming president as it just gets me too angry. What keeps me from going completely off the rails is focusing on the good people (and there are plenty) who are working for the greater good of people, animals and the planet. I don't have any particular word for this year (or any year for that matter). My "intention" for the year has been the same as it has been for over 37 years now. Not pick up a drink one day at a time and try to do the next right thing. My best wishes to you that 2025 goes much better than 2024.

Thank you, and I shall join you in the pursuit of trying not to think about That Man 🫣 Bravo to you for 37 years of doing the work, and long may it continue!

I chose make-believe, because I want to create a world with more health, wealth, and humor for all. Basically I'm delusional, but if my beloved country can believe in such a walking shit-show as the ticket to a good life, then I can curate a make-believe existence where there's kindness and less general fuckery.

Thanks for sharing this—I went and read your post and I like the way you think. “Kindness and less general fuckery” for 2025, indeed!

Another phrase like this is ‘magical thinking’. It’s usually spoken about as something you shouldn’t do, but it sounds fun and it’s a great way to cope with what is actually going on. Who doesn’t want something magical?

Amen to make-believe (has to be better than 'reality')

I’ve been doing the word thing instead of resolutions for about 15 years. This year it’s FOCUS. I’ve felt my attention and just life very scattered over the last few years with huge life changes and I want to recover my ability to focus and be intentional about what gets my focus.

Expand full comment

I wish you focus for the year ❤️

15 years is quite a streak! As someone who used to have a preternatural ability to focus that has gone haywire since the onset of perimenopause, I FEEL YOU. Hope the Word of the Year helps you find your way toward a less scattered existence 🤞🤞🤞
