Great tips! I also find talking about them with friends helps. And doing something concrete like volunteering with my NAACP chapter. I am working on getting the League of Women Voters to an expungement clinic/ GOTV event. MN expanded voting rights for people with felony records and we want to get them registered! This past week at work I got involved in an efforts to bring a presentation on antisemitism and Islamophobia to our area of 300 social workers.
Thank you for the journaling idea. Helped conquer middle of the night fears of the the wars, and a Trump presidency and of course more mundane things like my Sunday to- do list. I am also anxious about the antisemitism presentation blowing up into more antisemitism.
I’m so glad it helped you! I learned about it from the first anxiety doctor I saw back when I started having panic attacks. She told me about scientific studies where people who had been through a traumatic experience sat down and wrote about it for 20 minutes and their brain waves and physical symptoms of panic were brought back to normal levels. Really fascinating stuff!
There are flocks of Sandhill Cranes flying south over my home this Thanksgiving afternoon. Their unique and soulful cries have a wonderful calming effect. Life is good.
Whenever I’m going through something or adversity, I always remember a quote by Zig Ziglar: the next time you encounter a difficult obstacle or problem, you should smile and say, 'Here's my chance to grow.' It really improved my life and perspective.
Love all these tips. My recommendation for relaxing Instagram follows are Sesame Street and your favourite characters. Cookie Monster just got his own account and I am excited. There’s something about Elmo reminding me that he loves being my friend that just hits me right in the good feels.
Great fan of the long beach walk. All those scrambled thoughts end up falling in place. Great opportunity to feel grateful for the beauty of nature, watch the dogs play and say hi to people you pass. Energy and perspective powers the activism. Great tips. March on.
It's hard. But I liked the range of your tips. I, too, find a deep dive into the trouble helps. Maybe because it engages a different part of the brain? The thinking part rather than the panicking part? And while we might feel helpless to do anything about the big trouble we can understand it better? Also, being kind in our own lives definitely helps. Again, an area where we do have some control. And where what we do can make a big difference for someone else.
Well, what I am thinking is that organization, communication, forward action, knowledge of situation, those words relieve my thought terrors somewhat. Trump is a paper tiger. He is desperate and selfish and will use anyone, even his own children to save himself. He has created a rag tag following but to what worth. We need to stand tall. We can and will not let him defeat and destroy our country and our soul. He has no idea what he has awakened.
So true. I call the practice of focusing your anxiety on what you CAN control “PHEW: Productive Helpful Effective Worrying” - I should follow up with a post about that 😂
I love your tips.
Thank you! I appreciate it!

These tips will do nothing to overt what’s coming.
Actually, I think kindness and people taking care of their mental health while not the entirety of what people need to do is part of it.
Yes, well, that’s why I didn’t title this post “5 Tips for Averting the Apocalypse” 😂 There’s only so much I can help us with…
